Autumn is filter-change time – how to prepare for the heating season
Summer has loaded your ventilation filters with pollen and dust, and soon the windows will stay closed for a longer stretch. Autumn is therefore the most natural moment to change your filters – just like spring. This keeps your home's air fresh throughout the heating season.
Why autumn specifically?
Ventilation filters should be changed about 1–2 times a year, and two natural times are spring and autumn. Over the summer, pollen and dust have built up in the filter, so by autumn it is often already darkened. As we start spending more time indoors and the windows stay shut, good ventilation matters more than ever.
What does a clogged filter cause?
- Airflow drops and the air feels stuffy.
- The pressure difference rises and the unit's energy use can increase.
- Indoor-air pollutants aren't filtered as effectively.
A clean filter, by contrast, keeps the airflow right, saves energy and filters dust and fine particles out of the air you breathe.
Autumn checklist
- Change your ventilation unit's filters. Check the machine model and choose the filters that fit it.
- Check the cooker hood's grease filter. Wash or replace it – the summer grilling season may have left its mark.
- Remember the supply-air valve filters. They collect street dust and pollen and should be changed regularly.
- Reset the filter reminder according to the unit's instructions after changing.
