GREASE FILTER MAINTENANCE

A cooker hood filter can be either replaceable or washable. Most cooker hoods use a washable metal grease filter, but even washable filters should be replaced occasionally when necessary.

To clean a washable grease filter, soak it for 15–20 minutes in hot water mixed with dishwashing detergent. After soaking, rinse the filter thoroughly and let it dry completely. Some filter models can also be washed in a dishwasher. You can also use a degreasing cleaner specifically designed for this purpose.

It’s a good idea to check the cleanliness of the grease filter once a month, as a dirty filter is a fire safety hazard. Grease build-up blocks airflow in the duct and increases fire load. Although cooker hoods rarely ignite on their own, a grease fire starting on the stove can easily spread, igniting the grease in the filter and duct.

A dirty filter is also a hygiene risk, since accumulated grease provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.
